As part of AXA’s collaboration with the club’s sustainability strategy The Red Way, children from LFC Foundation’s STEM Primary programme boarded the Tara Boat research vessel, docked in Liverpool, to take part in an immersive workshop.

To the students’ delight, Reds players Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai, Jenna Clark, Faye Kirby and Jasmine Matthews made a surprise appearance, joining the lesson to learn how different marine species collaborate and co-exist – much like teammates working together on the football pitch.

Together, the players and students teamed up for a creative challenge, assigning sea creatures to football positions based on their unique traits and behaviours and even giving them unique Latin names inspired by LFC players who share similar qualities.

Rishi Jain, director of impact at LFC, said: “It’s incredibly important to raise awareness of all sustainability topics. To team up with AXA and the Tara Boat gives us the opportunity to deliver a worldwide impact across sustainability.

“At present, LFC aligns with 16 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals; the only one we’ve yet to fully engage with is ‘Life Below Water’. This marks the beginning of the club’s journey to strengthen efforts in this area, and we’re excited to continue this important work and look forward to building on it as part of our long-term commitment to protecting our oceans.”

Martin Powell, director of sustainability at AXA, said: “If we can use the players, the fans, the local community to put a voice to the ocean then we can accelerate action together.”

To help kick off the club’s commitment to ocean sustainability, AXA Climate will be providing the club with access to ocean modules, which will educate staff on biodiversity and the important role the ocean plays in our ecosystem.

The Tara Boat visit and video coincides with the publication of The Red Way 2023-24 season report, which showcases LFC’s commitment to sustainability across people, planet and communities, and highlights the club’s journey to promoting positive behavioural change and reducing its impact on the environment.
