Alexis Mac Allister helped Argentina reach the World Cup last 16 with a 3-2 victory against Cape Verde.

The Liverpool midfielder played every minute of a memorable tie in Miami overnight, which went into extra-time.

Mac Allister’s flick-on header from a corner kick led to Lisandro Martinez’s strike for Argentina’s second goal of the game.

Lionel Messi had put the reigning champions in front during the first half and Deroy Duarte equalised for Cape Verde after the break.

Martinez’s effort two minutes into the additional half-hour was equalised by an outstanding Sidny Lopes Cabral curler.

Diney Borges’ own goal with 111 minutes on the clock gave Argentina the lead for a third time and they did not relinquish it again.

Mac Allister’s nation will now meet Mohamed Salah’s Egypt in the Round of 16, to be played in Atlanta on Tuesday (July 7).
