In her latest column, Liverpool FC Women interim head coach Amber Whiteley reflects on the win at Brighton & Hove Albion and looks ahead to Sunday’s Barclays Women’s Super League meeting with Tottenham Hotspur at St Helens Stadium.

It was an important win for us at Brighton. The first-half performance was really strong and the energy from the team was brilliant.

We now have three games left this season in the WSL and we want to finish as strong as possible.

The win at Brighton was a big step in the right direction. We want to make sure we keep that fifth spot in the table now and that means putting our best foot forward every day in training and maximising the time we have together. Each game, we want to be better.

I was delighted to see Leanne Kiernan get her goal. Leanne has had a bit of a stop-start season but she has been back to good form recently and I hope that goal will give her another lift in confidence.

I played Ceri Holland in a more attacking role down the left and she was outstanding. She did a great job, was a real threat to Brighton’s back line and she got two assists. She made a huge contribution to us winning the game.

Ceri was also so unfortunate not to score with a really good effort late on. The Brighton goalkeeper was forced into an excellent save to keep that one out.

On Sunday we welcome Tottenham to St Helens Stadium and I want us to get back on track at home again after the loss to Aston Villa.

Tottenham are not on a great run of form but they do pose real attacking threats in their forward line so we’ve got to be mindful of that.

We need to approach this game with the same energy we started with at Brighton so it will be really important to have that drive and fight about us.

I would like to end this week’s column by showing our support to Zara Shaw, who is recovering from an ACL injury for the second time.

It’s difficult to find the words to express how much disappointment everyone feels for Zara at the moment, even more so given she has travelled this road before.

If anyone has the strength to come back a second time round it is Zara, and everyone at this football club will be with her every step of the way. We all think the absolute world of her. She is one of our own.

YNWA,

Amber
