Japan have confirmed Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo in their squad for the World Cup.

Endo is set to captain his country at the tournament, which will be played in the USA, Mexico and Canada.

Drawn in Group F, Japan will face the Netherlands (June 14), Tunisia (June 21) and Sweden (June 26).

“I’m glad to be in the Japan squad for the World Cup,” said Endo. “It’s an honour to lead this Japan team as the captain.

“It wasn’t an easy way to recover from the injury but I believed in myself to make this happen and will keep working hard to get fit for the games.

“Thank you all my teammates, staff and the fans for always being with and supporting me.

“I hope to see all the Liverpool FC fans on the pitch at Anfield next week before going to the World Cup. YNWA.”
