Harvey Elliott, Jarell Quansah and Tyler Morton featured as England advanced to a quarter-final against Spain at the U21 European Championship despite a 2-1 defeat by Germany.

Liverpool midfielder Elliott captained the Young Lions and played the first half of Wednesday’s final Group B fixture, while Quansah started and finished the game.

Morton, meanwhile, came off the bench shortly after the hour in Slovakia.

England needed to win to top the group but trailed 2-0 by the 33rd minute due to goals from Ansgar Knauff and Nelson Weiper.

Alex Scott pulled one back for Lee Carsley’s side with around a quarter of an hour remaining but an equaliser did not follow and the holders were forced to settle for second place, which was assured thanks to Czechia beating Slovenia in Group B’s other match.

Therefore, England will now face Group A winners Spain in the last eight on Saturday (8pm BST kick-off).
