InterviewSam Kerr Q&A: 'There wasn't even a second thought about coming back to Liverpool'
Sam Kerr quickly realised Liverpool FC Women is the right club for her – and that is why she was never going to turn down the opportunity to return.
Having spent the second half of last season on loan with the Reds, Scotland midfielder Kerr has today completed a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
Soon after passing a medical and signing her contract at the AXA Melwood Training Centre, the 26-year-old sat down for an interview and explained why it was an easy decision to come back for good.

Sam, welcome back. This time, it’s a permanent move…
Firstly, thank you. I’m so excited to get started and I’ve enjoyed my spell here so I just wanted to make it a little bit longer now, so I’m really happy that we could get it over the line and that I’m here for the long term.
Your loan spell made you want to extend your time here, then?
Yeah, I think I knew after a couple of months that I was here that I was really loving it and if I had the opportunity to stay it’s something that I’d love to do. And when Liverpool came in, there wasn’t even a second thought. It was, ‘I want to do this and I want to stay at Liverpool.’
You enjoyed some big moments in your short time here, such as that first WSL win at Anfield and an Adobe Women’s FA Cup semi-final too. What were your highlights?
Yeah, you named two of them there. They were two of the big highlights for me – obviously winning at Anfield and against Manchester United, and obviously I got to assist Fuka [Nagano]’s unbelievable goal. I mean, I never did much, but she made it look good! Obviously when we beat Arsenal that was a really good day, all the fans were there and that was something special. So, yeah, hoping to create more of them in the future.

Experiences such as those must have whetted your appetite for life at Liverpool…
Yeah, I really think that we have it in us [to achieve more big moments] and parts of last year obviously showed that. I think we’re a really competitive bunch and we can take on anybody in the league, so if we can bring that and perform like we can then it’s going to be an exciting season for us.
Does playing in the Barclays Women’s Super League bring out the best in your game?
Yeah, I think the WSL is probably the best league in the world right now and playing in that top league, in every game you have to be on it and it’s something that every player dreams to play in. To be here, and to be here for the long term, is great for me as a player to improve and hopefully to implement the things I’m good at, hopefully bring them every game and get better as we go.
It feels like you’re part of a really close-knit group here?
One thing about this club is that we’re all a big family: the staff, the players, the background staff, the kitchen staff, everyone here. When you walk through the doors in the morning everyone is so welcoming and you love coming to your job every single day. I think being part of Liverpool and everything that Liverpool brings within it is amazing and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
What about living in the city? Are you embracing the Scouse way of life?
Yeah, I’m not sure I understand them yet! But it’s similar to Glasgow in some ways so it feels like a home away from home and I can only keep saying that it is that. The more and more time I’m spending here, the more I’m really falling in love with Liverpool.
You’ve got a good Scottish contingent here too, with Jenna Clark and fellow new signing Kirsty Maclean…
Yeah, we joke around saying that the Scottish are taking over! It’s good to have Scottish people around and I actually think the more Scottish people the better, to be honest! It’s nice to have them and familiar faces and people that you’ve grown up with and you’re close with, so you can always go back to them even if times get tough and stuff. So yeah, it’s good.
What are your hopes and targets for the season ahead?
Personally, I want to give everything I can to the team and hopefully contribute a lot more and provide that on the field, and be a good teammate off the field. As a team, obviously it’s a fresh start for us. There’s a lot of change that’s happened over the last few months, so we’re going to regroup together, we’re going to set our aims and ambitions for the season and I’m pretty sure we’ll go ahead from there and that it will be a good one.
