NewsLiverpool's Greatest - No.57: Diogo Jota
Years: 2020-2025
Appearances: 182
Goals: 65
Trophies: League Cup (2022, 2024), FA Cup (2022), Premier League (2024-25)
Diogo Jota will forever be Liverpool’s number 20 and is much missed.
The Portuguese forward produced a litany of special moments for the club’s supporters during his five seasons at Anfield.
He arrived as a proven Premier League goalscorer from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and backed himself to force his way into Liverpool’s superlative front line.
It is safe to say he did that and more.
Competing with Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah for game time, Jota quickly won over Kopites with his finishing ability and work-rate – including a Champions League hat-trick at Atalanta on just his 10th appearance.
So much so that he earned the honour of his incredibly catchy chant that became the soundtrack to many a matchday.
Jota fired in 34 goals in his first two seasons, collecting winner’s medals in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup along the way. Tallies of seven and 15 in the following campaigns took him beyond the half-century mark.
But rather than the amount, it was the importance of a lot of those strikes that can help explain why Jota was so loved.

A Merseyside derby at Anfield was unlocked by a slaloming run and Kop-end finish by the attacker during the run-in of 2024-25.
That goal – and a number of others in the term – helped Jota fulfil his ambition of becoming a Premier League champion.
“It is a remarkable achievement for a small guy that came from Gondomar, where I had this dream,” he said afterwards.
The footballing world was then left in shock in July 2025 when Jota tragically passed away in a road traffic accident in which his brother, Andre Silva, also died.
To mark his legacy, the decision was made to retire the Liverpool No.20 shirt he wore with distinction across all levels.
He will never be forgotten.
