Alexander Isak will be included in Liverpool’s matchday squad for the first time in Wednesday’s Champions League fixture versus Atletico Madrid.

The new signing is now ready for game time after almost a week of training at the club.

And head coach Arne Slot hinted the No.9’s debut is imminent and he is going to feature for at least part of the 8pm BST kick-off at Anfield.

Speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Slot said of Isak: “There is definitely a chance, because he is in the squad.

“Then there is a chance to play. Normally I would say 99.9 per cent sure, but I can say it’s 100 per cent sure he will not play 90 minutes. But he is part of the squad.

“It is already a Champions League game to look forward to but if people look forward to his playing time, that could mean that could happen tomorrow as well.

“The only thing that is sure is he will not play 90, and all the rest you will see tomorrow.”

Visitors Atletico will be without Julian Alvarez, who was forced off during their weekend win over Villarreal, while Johnny Cardoso is absent after he suffered an ankle injury in training on Monday.

Also ruled out for the La Liga outfit are Thiago Almada, Alex Baena and Jose Maria Gimenez.

Diego Simeone’s full 22-man squad for the journey to Liverpool was confirmed ahead of Atletico’s departure from Spain on Tuesday.

Curtis Jones will not be involved for the Reds, meanwhile, with Saturday’s Merseyside derby at Anfield the target for the midfielder to come back from a fitness issue.

The Reds’ submitted ‘List A’ for the competition’s league phase did not include Federico Chiesa.

Alexis Mac Allister, who was in training having been withdrawn at half-time against Burnley last weekend, and Dominik Szoboszlai could make their 100th appearances for Liverpool on the night.

Slot was also asked if Szoboszlai is likely to switch to the centre of the pitch from right-back, with Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong returning to action.

“But we also have four very good midfielders fit as well: [Wataru] Endo, Mac Allister, Dominik and Florian [Wirtz]. Curtis is not fit,” he said.

“In every position we have a lot of competition. [Dominik] can play in both positions and let’s see if he plays tomorrow where he is going to play.”
