Golfer Ryan Gerard’s name means he is enjoying plenty of Liverpudlian support at The Open.
One of the sport’s four major championships is being held at Royal Birkdale in Southport – just a short journey up the north-west coast from Liverpool.
And the American, who goes into today’s final round three shots adrift of the lead, has revealed that he is proving a popular contender with the crowd.
“I think some of the kids think I am Steven Gerrard!” Gerard said after Saturday’s third round of play.
“There’s quite a few songs. I think some of them I can’t repeat! The lads were out in full force today [and] it’s nice to know I’m probably the most hated person in Manchester! I’m glad we’re in Liverpool and it’s been a lot of fun.
“It’s kind of funny, it’s not even spelled the same but I’ll take it. I’ll take any support that we can from across-the-pond folks.”
