Four former Liverpool players and Forever Reds members received their official England legacy caps – recognising their contributions to the national team – at Anfield last Sunday.

The special pre-match presentation celebrated the careers of Gordon Milne, Ian Callaghan, Phil Neal and Steve McMahon, each of whom represented both the Reds and their country with merit.

They were presented with their special cap and unique legacy number by FA chair Debbie Hewitt, as part of a chronological record marking every player to have appeared for England since 1872.

Gordon Milne – legacy number 819

Milne earned 14 caps between 1963 and 1964, representing his country with consistency and quality during a successful club and international career.

Ian Callaghan – legacy number 845

Liverpool’s record appearance-maker with 857 games, Callaghan was also an England international, playing four times for the national side from 1966 to 1977, including being part of the 1966 FIFA World Cup-winning squad.

Phil Neal – legacy number 911

The Reds’ most decorated player, Neal amassed 50 caps between 1976 and 1983, becoming a trusted and integral presence for the national side.

Steve McMahon – legacy number 1,001

A dynamic midfielder, McMahon made 17 appearances for the Three Lions from 1982 to 1990, including involvement in major tournament squads.

The legacy caps are to honour England’s footballing history and were introduced as part of a project that started in November 2019 to mark the men’s national team’s historic 1,000th match.

As part of this initiative, special legacy caps are being presented to every capped player, acknowledging their individual place in the Three Lions’ story.
