Cody Gakpo has experience of being the hero in a cup final and wants that pride again when Liverpool meet Newcastle United at Wembley this Sunday.

The Dutchman handed former club PSV Eindhoven the KNVB Cup with a second-half winner against AFC Ajax in the 2021-22 showpiece, a game in which future teammate Ryan Gravenberch was also on the scoresheet.

Gakpo played his part in the Reds' heroic and unforgettable Carabao Cup triumph last season, only making him hungrier for another medal to add to his collection.

"I did it once at PSV, so hopefully I can do it again at Liverpool," the No.18 told Liverpoolfc.com when asked about envisioning scoring in a final.

"You can ask the players who are here longer and who played more finals and decided the finals how it feels. It's an amazing feeling and maybe the best feeling you can have as an attacking player, to score at that moment in a final.

"Playing a final, winning a trophy is always something special. Last season we won it there in a very beautiful way, in the last minute Virgil [van Dijk] scored a great header and won us that game. That was a beautiful moment and I think everybody wants to relive that again.

"I think when we won it and we celebrated in front of the fans and they sang their songs, that was a very beautiful moment for us. I think those moments will always stick with you for the rest of your career.

"It could be our first trophy of the season, so I think we are very eager to win. Hopefully that would be the beginning of the end to a very beautiful season."

Gakpo can be considered a crucial figure in Liverpool taking their defence of the League Cup all the way to the last hurdle.

He's scored a team-high five goals in the competition this term and is the only player in the squad to start every tie.

Arne Slot's arrival has seen the attacker predominantly operate in his more natural left-wing role, with the tactical tweak having the desired effect.

"I think he offered me a lot," Gakpo said of the head coach. "The first thing he did was change my position slightly, so back to the left. That was maybe a small change on paper but for me it was a big change.

"Then I had to come into the team as well and he gave me the chance to show myself.

"Obviously he's trying to help me to develop myself in moments in the game, how to be smarter, how to be better, how to get yourself more in scoring positions and giving the decisive pass and everything like this.

"He's helping me a lot. The manager and the staff, they try to help everybody, and I think everybody can see a lot of players are developing well.

"I think everybody, when they get the chance to play, is also playing very well at the moment and hopefully it can continue like that."

Newcastle, searching for their first major domestic honour since 1955, are the opposition at the national stadium this time around.

In a Premier League duel between the finalists nearly three weeks ago, Liverpool overcame Eddie Howe's Magpies 2-0 through Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister strikes.

Gakpo and his teammates are fully aware of the well-rounded challenge that awaits as they target bringing a record-extending 11th League Cup back to Anfield.

The 25-year-old finished: "Hopefully it's going to be a very nice game with us winning at the end.

"If you look at the table, how they played, [they are] very good. They are a very big threat attacking-wise as well. Obviously [Alexander] Isak as a striker who is scoring a lot of goals, the wingers who are doing very well, strong midfield and solid in the back. A very good team.

"Hopefully it's going to be a very nice final to watch and hopefully we win at the end."
