NewsAlexis Mac Allister on PL inspiration, season ahead and becoming a dad
Alexis Mac Allister would love to inspire the next generation of players in the same way he was as a child watching the Premier League.
The Argentina international is certainly going about that objective in the right way, having lifted the World Cup with his country in 2022 and become a champion at Liverpool last season.
A 2023 signing from Brighton & Hove Albion, the Reds’ No.10 will be going at ‘100 per cent every single game’ this term as he takes on the challenge of trying to help defend both of those honours.
“When I was younger, there weren’t many Argentinians in the Premier League but I used to wake up very early in the mornings to watch players like Carlos Tevez and Maxi Rodriguez,” Mac Allister told GQ.
“I was a big fan of the Premier League, so I hope the next generations are doing the same with us, not just with me but with Argentinian players in general.”

He continued: “To play in a World Cup is really special. I had the opportunity to play in one and we won it, which is not easy at all. [It] was in the middle of a season so this one [next summer] is going to be different.
“But I don’t think about the future. I know some players worry about getting injured before the World Cup, but I don’t think that way. I always say that you have to go 100 per cent every single game.
“It’s not going to be easy [to defend the World Cup] because there will be a lot of good teams, really good players and we understand it’s not easy to win two in a row. But we hope the next one is a big one for Argentina as well, and that we can defend the trophy and win another one.
“That’s the mentality we have – we always want more.”
Whatever happens during a significant upcoming period on the pitch, the midfielder can plan for a life-changing moment away from football, with Mac Allister set to become a father too.
He said: “It sounds funny, but I really like football – for me it’s my passion and the only thing I really enjoy… until now because [my girlfriend and I] are having a baby girl.
“I’ve received advice from Cody Gakpo, and Dominik [Szoboszlai] is having a baby too, which is nice because we are in another part of the world from our families so we need that help.
“[Having a daughter] is going to change my life for sure. I’m really looking forward to that.”
Mac Allister was speaking as part of the launch of Liverpool’s new adidas third kit for 2025-26, which was officially unveiled and went on sale this morning.

The popular sea-green colourway design takes inspiration from the 1990s and early 2000s, and has struck a chord with him.
“I’m a huge fan of vintage shirts,” said Mac Allister. “I have a strong connection with adidas because of Argentina but in the past Liverpool have had some really, really good shirts with adidas.
“That’s something both the fans and players want to see again because certain shirts represent an attachment to the past.”
